MAXIM
MAGAZINE REVIEW |
 |
|
Maxim
is one of the best magazines I've come across in a long time.
For those who only read the first few lines of each review
before moving on, I'll sum up my comments by saying that it's
the best magazine for guys in a long while, combining girls,
investigative journalism, humor, advice, and useless trivia.
It's a blast to read.
Simon
McChester
Maxim
has articles that tell you how to do things that you always
wanted to know how to do. You want gadgets, well maxim has
them all, even ones you can afford . Plus they have interviews
with real men like Dennis Hopper, Jack Black, Billy Bob Thorten.
Gilberto Tarango
Their pictorials are great, the women are stunning. The stories
and articles are very enjoyable, there is always something
interesting to read, and the magazine is filled with facts.
The content of this magazine is also outstanding, it's huge.
Angel Mariscal
Each
and every page you look at in this magazine has one of three
elements: sex, candor, and sport. More often than not, more
than one element exists. Maxim magazine's topics are broad
enough to appeal to every man (and even some women). Whether
it's about better performance or earthquakes, Maxim's writers
present all their material in ingeniously witty ways.
Michael Potters
No
proper review of Maxim can go without mentioning the girls
that grace it's pages each month. What's great about Maxim
is that not only are all of the girls extremely beautiful,
they are also up-and-coming personalities in their field,
whether it be modeling, movies, or television. Stars like
Shannon Elizabeth, Eliza Dushku, and Kristen Dunst have increased
in popularity after the exposure generated by their Maxim
photo-shoots. Maxim is definitely the magazine to read to
see who will be Hollywood's next top star.
Dave Berry
The
articles in Maxim may appear to be fluff compared to other
magazines, but they're actually informative in all the right
places. The reader just has to dig a little deeper (Maxim
lets readers use their analytical skills!), and they'll find
things that other publications would never say. Learn about
the most daring prison escapes ever attempted, a briefcase
that carries the codes for nuclear armaegeddon, and much more.
Each issue also has a bunch of great monthly standbys: The
jokes, the "caption this!" section, Hiroki's attempt
at rating different products, and the lowdown on the newest
things pouring out of the entertainment industry. Maxim has
it all.
Doug Calcs
For
all you literary scholars, Maxim's greatest asset is that
it's a study in contrasts. Here is a magazine that pokes fun
of the American way of life, yet has shown its true patriotism
in the past few months. It gives readers advice on attracting
women, though the underlying message is always to please the
fairer sex. There are reviews and advertisements for gadgets
and toys that would please both the sophisticated man and
the coach potato slob. Every man has a side of him that wants
to be suave and sophisticated, yet lazy and politically-incorrect,
while remaining sensitive and with heart. Maxim balances the
tone of its articles nicely, and caters to all three personalities
very well. And who says males aren't complex creatures?
Todd Wilks
This
magazine is full of interesting articles, funny jokes, fair
and educated reviews, and useful/useless trivia. You can easily
read it from cover to cover and stay amused the entire time.
Sure, there are some scantily-clad women in it, but even as
a straight female I can appreciate a beautiful woman's body.
Maxim doesn't mind mixing seriousness with fun, which is something
that women's magazines have yet to discover. People say that
Cosmo is essentially the women's equivalent of Maxim, but
it's humor level is nowhere near that of Maxim. It prints
funny jokes, hilarious Beat-This-Captions (my favorite feature),
and isn't afraid to superimpose a beanie atop President Bush's
head. It goes where truly no magazine has before; it's fascinating.
Until another magazine can have such a fun-loving, yet level-headed
perspective on the world, Maxim will definitely be my favorite.

STUFF
MAGAZINE REVIEW |
 |
|
Stuff
is from the people who brought you Maxim it's about the same
but it has a little more punch to it. One thing I like about
"Stuff" is that it features articles written by
the lovely Dawn on what women like.
Bill Walters
I
never really got into magazines until I picked up a Stuff
one day. It reminds me of a less naked Hustler/National Lampoon
combo. After I subscribed I noticed that now and then they
had these great articles about how to play devious pranks
on people and that's what hooked me. Lots of little engaging
tid-bits and anecdotes not to mention the scantly clad women
& what young guys should be wearing. I love it.
TJ Malloy
The
magazine is all about hilarity and while it accomplishes its
goals quite well, along with providing insights to other aspects
of male culture like hot girls, cool cars, and all the clothes
and gadgets a guy could ever dream of.

FHM
MAGAZINE REVIEW |
 |
|
Something
about FHM is just so much more clever than the rest. All I
can say is, be sure to take a look at it. I've read Maxim
and a couple others that are mildly interesting, but this
is the first mag that I continually devour from cover to cover.
I almost always pass it on to a writer friend of mine just
because the writing style is so delicious, I will laugh out
loud repeatedly while reading it.
Greg Mcfarlan
This
is a great magazine containing great pictures of beautiful
girls, useful everyday advice (from DIY to Health), gadgets,
film and music reviews and stories from around the world.
Bill Nolan
It
has real funny stories and weird pictures and fashion and
is just a great read for both men and woman.
Lee Brass
The
great thing about FHM is that it can be used as reference
material and you'll find that you often turn back to a copy
months or years after you've bought it.

MEN'S
HEALTH MAGAZINE REVIEW |
 |
|
I love
the humor, wit and sarcasm of the editorial staff. Men's Health
gives you straight-up nutritional advice. It gives us insight
into fitness, love, nutrition, mental and physical health.
David Douglas
This is
one of the few magazines that I can actually read from cover
to cover; it has tips on how to fight off sickness (i.e. cold,
flu, etc.), how to exercise. I've found out what I've been
doing wrong in my workouts as a result, and how to please
a woman.
Presley
VanHorn
Never
have I read a magazine for men with so much practical advice.
The articles on self-improvement don't just deal with exercise.
They include style tips, dating and sex help and travel information
along with other thought provoking articles on men's issues
such as the effects
of disease and divorce.
Carlos Rojas
Worth
every penny, month after month, year after year. The workout
sections are detailed and offer a great way to change your
routine with every issue. It also offers a good selection
of advice jobs, relationships, fitness, diet, and sex.

GQ
MAGAZINE REVIEW |
 |
|
there
are so many positives about GQ that a subscription is not
only recommended, it is almost required. First, and perhaps
foremost, Alan Richman's food/restaurant columns. Second,
Peter Bart (the once-deposed editor of Variety) writes a great
Hollywood column. Third, GQ is far and away superior to its
rivals, which I believe are Esquire and, somewhat surprisingly,
Vanity Fair.
Aylee Husim
Fourth,
the fashion features and celebrity interviews are beyond compare.
Finally, GQ generally has one article a month that I would
describe as investigative journalism, and these articles can't
be missed. All in all, GQ is an essential for any magazine
rack.
Wade L. Londenshire
I think
a very few magazines can boast of getting better and better
with the years. GQ is one of these exceptions. While most
of the competitors insult you by presuming your attention
span does not exceed 5-6 minutes the magazine presents you
with the articles that are sometimes 6-7 pages long and very
profound.
Britt McSheldon
Yeah,
you get your hundreds pages of the latest fashion which is
also a reason to buy the GQ but the glossiness can be found
in many other places. The magazine talks to you in the voices
of people you'd surely like to have as friends. There is no
elitism, no showing off, no "entertaining" silliness.
The authors' irony is endearing and mostly aimed at themselves.
But do not get the impression it's small-scale. The magazine
is very well-connected and you are guaranteed to get the interviews
with and the profiles of all the celebrities you'd like to
hear about. The persons which interest me no less are these
common people you'll have no chance to meet reading the rest
of the "men's magazines". The need to sell many
sorts of fashionable merchandise and to form the yearning
for a lot of expensive nonessential stuff is coped with somehow
- the magazine had not lost the most precious gift - the gift
of human speech.

MEN'S
FITNESS MAGAZINE REVIEW |
 |
|
This is
the best mens mag I've ever read. It is definitely written
by a man's man. Anti-PC, pro-MALENESS, this mag covers exercise,
emotions, sex, relationships, and almost anything else with
which men are concerned.
Bill Gallergher
Maximum
content and well illustrated with great weight training programs
and nutrition information.

ESQUIRE
MAGAZINE REVIEW |
 |
|
Esquire
was the Men's Bible in the 60's and then it wasn't so good
in the 1990's. Under the current editor, the journalism is
more interesting, the humor on target and the fiction superb.
The magazine has recently featured the lost fiction of Raymond
Carver and regularly features the work of people like David
Sedaris. For my money its a better value to GQ which can be
real boring in certain issues. One recent GQ issue had a multiple
page spread on slabs of beef.

DETAILS
MAGAZINE REVIEW |
 |
|
Initially,
I had doubts about Details. It wasn't so much that I had a
specific complaint about Details, but rather I had held a
mostly negative view of fashion magazines in general, which
I view ideologically as "commercial" and lacking
"meaning." Yeah, I know it sounds foolish now, but
it seem to make sense to be at that time. However, after actually
reading several issues of Details, I have become impressed
with it. The writing in Details is cool, almost in an unhurried
kind of way, but is also remarkably direct and to the point.
One rarely finds reporting this good in other fashion magazines.
Also of equal, or perhaps better, quality and sophistication
is the fashion photography. Details features consistently
excellent photos of the newest trends in men's fashion. But
Details is not about any kind of men's clothing; while GQ's
trademark is more bourgeois in orientation, Details features
styles that appeal more to the person with a bohemian sense
of fashion. The album, movie, book reviews - which was another
aspect that I was immensely impressed with - also feature
items that are mostly along the lines of bohemian taste. Overall
Details is an excellent magazine, perhaps the best of its
kind, and I recommend it without reservation.
Barry Murphy
If GQ
Was Younger, Hipper, Edgier..., January 9, 2002
Reviewer: A magazine reader from Cross Roads America
. It would fall somewhere in between Details and Maxim. Details
always had fashions from the edge with rock renegades, independent
movie stars, rap artists, Hustler bunnies and super DJs and
mixmasters as models. I remember when they had Samuel L and
P Grier and them from "Jackie Brown" doing a spread.
It isn't unusual for Details to be drenched in Street Versace,
FUBU, Armani, Cardin, Bose, and Porsche. I was with them from
the beginning and always liked the classic 'in-depth' reports
from columnist Anka Radakovich and the great sound reviews.
Details also keeps a reader on his toes because they stimulate
the gray matter with reports of, for example, environmental
concerns, War and the fight for better consumer safety. Overall,
a good mag.
K. Mark Johnson
With a
liberal point of view in politics, a focus on the male celebrities
in entertainment and other fields, and fashion trends for
young and mature generation, this magazine really stands out.
To me, GQ is for those 40 or 50 something conservative men,
who's fashion involves only with suits; Gear or Maxam and
likes are for hip-hop generations, with women in their heads
all the time. Details covers many aspects of life, is the
chic magazine for modern men.
MJ Oliver
Details
is best described as more intellectual than Maxim (and it's
20+ clones), but not as pretentious or materialistic as GQ
and company. Excellent subject matter, the best writing of
any entertainment magazine in publication, reliable critics,
and fashion shoots that are actually interesting and have
clothes even I would wear make it the most enjoyable and relevant
mag around. Through and through, Details is THE magazine out
today, and probably will be for a long time.

ESPN
MAGAZINE REVIEW |
 |
|
I've been
a subscriber since the inaugural issue. ESPN the Mag is the
equivalent of Wired Magazine for sports - brilliant colors,
edgy ads, spastic layout, and in depth articles, often with
a forward-looking perspective or drill-down profile of a person,
team, or issue.
John Rojas
My favorite
features: the full-page Zoom pics near the front, the All
News tidbits running along the bottom of the Jump pages, athlete
profiles.
What needs work: Dan Patrick's interviews - he rarely has
anyone interesting.
Kenny Hoang
But besides
SI, this is the only non-business/non-tech mag I get and it
keeps me in the know. On top of that, it's way cheap for the
quality of articles and depth of content. A no-brainer for
even the average sports fan (me). And a great Sunday morning
read.
Steve Terrace
If you
like the personalities on ESPN's Sportscenter, then this is
for you! (If you're looking for serious just-the-facts sports,
then check out S.I.) Every two weeks, ESPN has great articles
and commentary. The magazine is extra-large in size, so you
get some really cool looking full-page pictures. There are
also many regular features (almost like "Scorecard"
or "leadingOff" in S.I.) including the week's top
ten and my personal favorite, Monologue. ESPN has done a great
job putting together their own magazine.
Carlton Rogers
This magazine
has some interesting articles as it tries to replicate the
success of the popular Sportscenter tv program. Many of the
articles are written by the same sportscasters from the show,
with mixed results. If you enjoy Sportscenter and the ESPN's
"Page 2" area on the website, you will probably
like this magazine.

SPORTS
ILLUSTRATED MAGAZINE |

SI fills
the role of recapping the major developments in the sports
world, while adding a great mix of some feature articles (often
athlete profiles or controversial issues), "hit-and-run"
facts and figures, as well as the obligatory editorials. When
I consider what I look forward to each week, it's actually
not the wrap-ups of major sports events or some high profile
story. It's the "little things.
Carlos Rojas
Yes, it's
true. You'll read more about baseball, football and basketball
than you will about swimming, golf, or extreme sports. But
accept SI for what it is - a great way to stay current, go
deeper than the daily sports page, and be entertained. The
price offered here is cheaper than my own subscription - it's
also cheaper than a cup of coffee and lasts longer. So if
you are even half a sports fan, you should be treating yourself
to a weekly SI.
Terry
Brooks
SI has
a lot of really good features week after week. There are always
intense action pictures of all sports, not just the major
ones. For those who love sports, this is one of the best ones
around for interesting commentary and pictures in every issue.
I enjoy the fascinating stories from off the field and how
sports is a part of life.
Chris Sallister
Some of
the best stories I've ever read have come out of SI (the BC
college hoops scandal and the Greg Lemond comeback story are
two that come to mind). if you care about sports and the stories
behind the athletes, this is the mag to get.
